This may come as a surprise to some of you, but I’m a big supporter of the Creative Commons licensing organization, or as I like to call them – “CC”. You see, CC seems to be a means of allowing creativity to flow without the stifling side effects of copyright (what I like to call “C”) protection on the surface. But it goes much deeper than that. CC sees itself as a means to promote the freedom to have others build upon others’ work. And I like that. Because it promotes another big key in the EffTD™ lifestyle, something I call The C Factor.
The way CC is seen from afar is one thing, but it essentially promotes eventual productivity in as much as anyone who has any inkling to create can just take someone’s developed idea and develop it for their own purpose. And if the creator allows the work to be used commercially, all the better for the guy who “builds” upon the work and makes a buck.
Some of you may say, “Mike, doesn’t CC see things differently, because it isn’t the same as C in that it allows freedom?” See, that’s where I’d say that you can’t see the forest from the trees on the CC and C issue. Let me break it down for you:
When you take someone’s work and build upon it, you’ve copied it and then made it your own. Thus, CC=C, or if you made it better, it’s a CC+; worse – it’s a CC-. Do you see?
See, no one likes a C of any sort. Unless you’re Effing The Dog™. The letter C in any combination is synonymous with the method you are studying here.
And that’s The C Factor. Implement it in as much of your daily routine as you can. Copy off of people, preferably those that have proven high performance credentials. Don’t be fooled by people wearing glasses. I wear glasses.
The C Factor also lends itself to other CC items. Like in email. You can CC all your junk mail and joke emails (see An Ideal Inbox Is A Full Inbox). NEVER BCC THEM. You want people to know where they came from so they will respond, sometimes even in kind.
The other benefit of The C Factor is that you become average. In Academy-Award winner Mike Judge’s film “Idiocracy” , two of the most average people in the world ended up going to the future and becoming two of the brightest stars. If you look at it from that point of view – anyone Effing The Dog™ will be right up there in the coming years. Isn’t that exciting?
Try adopting The C Factor for a week, you’ll see how CC will help you exceed your current level of Effing The Dog™.
CC you soon!
