How I “Got” Golf – Part Two

by Mike Vardy on July 11, 2008

This is the second in a two-part series.  For the previous entry, click here.

This, being my first foray into the world of golf, I had no idea why they dubbed the start of the game as "tee off time."  After several attempts at hitting the ball and failing miserably at that, I fully understood what "teed off" actually meant.

We had made our first drives andafter going through the bushes to search for this tiny little white ball, I caught up with my team at the next hole.  This went on for an hour or two, until I actually learned that not thinking made me a better golfer.  Not thinking is such an innate part of a golfer's life, that it can easily carry over to other aspects of their lives.  See John Daly.

As the day and the drinking carried on, I was able to clearly see why this game is so popular.  I also think this a ritual that anyone who wants to enhance their Effing The Dog experience needs to embrace.  I jotted down a few of the key components that illustrate this:

1.  It takes forever to play.  And you can drink.  Ergo, you get to drink for forever.  In case you didn't realize, that is a long time.

2.  You can drive anywhere.  On the path, on the grass, anywhere.  It's like off-roading for elitists.

3.  Your athleticism knows no bounds.  Skinny, fat, clumsy, double-jointed – you can be a great golfer.

4.  You can wear whatever you want.  Really.

5.  You are accomplishing something AND nothing at the same time.  It is both a perplexing and beautiful thing.

Nothing I have ever experienced comes close to golfing.  Its beauty is in how useless it can be to some, and yet so useful to others.  So, EffTDers, get out there and hit the fairway – your game and drink awaits!
