EffTD Superheroes

by Mike Vardy on July 17, 2008

Heroes come in many forms.  Some are extraordinary like fire, police and ambulance people.  Yep, that is what they are called now.

Others are everyday heroes – like lawyers, for example.  What would the world be like without lawyers, I ask you?

Then there are the superheroes.  The ones that have been created in comic book and tabloid lore.  They achieve above and beyond what normal humans can.  Hence, they are superhuman.  They get the job done.  So,  does that leave those of us who are Effing The Dog without superheroes to look up to?  Not even close.

While there are plenty of superheroes who GTD better than anyone, there are those that EffTD at levels that are just as impressive, if not more so.

Take The Wonder Twins as an example.  These two twins from the planet Exxor take the combination of superheroism and Effing The Dog to great heights.  With Jayna morphing into such useless animals as a giant panda or pelican and Zan taking the form of various states of liquid, they may not save the day immediately, but they eventually do so in a roundabout way.  Sure, they could find more immediate ways of stopping the bad guys, but then they wouldn't be exploring their full range of powers.  And episodes of Superfriends would always run short.

Groo The Wanderer , while not a traditional superhero, fits the bill as well.  First off, he's a wanderer.  That qualifies him for instant EffTD status right there.  He also enters a lot "frays", which can last for panels and panels (the equivalent of hours and hours in comic book time).  And, despite all the destruction he tends to leave in his wake, he's generally a good guy.  I can relate to this.

The Tick is another of the EffTD superheroes.  If it wasn't for his efficient-minded sidekick, The Moth, he'd likely rank higher.  (On a side note, in issue #3 of The Tick comic book, my letter to the editor was published.  Third.  Best.  Day.  Ever.)

I'd also like to take the time to mention both Spiderman and Iron Man here as well.  While both are generally regarded as focus-based superheroes, they do bear some qualities that EffTDers can aspire to.  Spiderman could get things done faster if he laid off on the quips – to his credit he makes those his trademark of sorts.  And Iron Man, well, he's a drinker.

So, for every Superman and Batman, there is a superhero that takes his or her time in getting the job done.  And with "Eventualism" as your superpower, you may find yourself a member of "The League Of Ordinary Gentlemen" as well.  Eventually, of course.
