EffTD Tool Of The Day: Events

by Mike Vardy on August 11, 2008

Summer is the time for vacations – and the best kind are impromptu* ones.  August is traditionally the warmest month in my neck of the woods, and Xerxes and I were treated to one such vacation.  We went sailing and then enjoyed the BC Day long weekend.  (BC Day is a celebration of our province's birthday – which reached the ripe old age of 150 this year).  The sailing was fun, except the whole seasickness ordeal I went through, and the long weekend was even more eventful.  Which brings us to The EffTD Tool Of The Day:  Events.

EffTD EventsThe ideology behind EffTD starts with the foundation known as Eventualism.  And the root word of Eventualism is, in fact, eventual.  And the root word of that is, in more fact, event.  So really, it's no wonder that partaking in events is a valuable tool you can use to become better at Effing The Dog.

The summer is full of events, so there is no better time to use this tool to its fullest.  Long weekends are especially advantageous because you get that extra day to eventually participate in events.

Here is a list of proven events that will help you in becoming a more proficient follower of EffTD:

1.  Sailing.  Takes a long time to get anywhere and then get back.  The less wind, the better.

2.  Concerts.  Try to drive (or better yet, sail) to something that incorporates a series of concerts, such as Lollipopooza or The Warped Caravan Tour .  Then you get to partake in the next event as well, which is…

3.  Camping.  One of the rare times both you and a bear can do the same thing in the woods, and the search for the perfect camping spot can be an event unto itself.

4.  Ikea Trips .  Since Ikea stores are few and far between (up here in Canada, at least – comment me if i'm way off base elsewhere) you can make a day of this.  Nothing says "pure eventual fun" than day-tripping at a large Swedish store.  No, really.

5.  Beer festivals.  If you have to, you can substitute this for wine or mixed drink festivals.  Even Chamber of Commerce mixers are an acceptable replacement.

6.  You should really try the Ikea thing.  Seriously.

As of this writing, you still have one more long weekend at your disposal, so be sure to use/abuse it wisely.  I'm pretty sure Ikea is open on statutory holidays.

*incidentally, impromptu is french for "running out on responsibility"…FYI.

Ikea is perfect for EffTD…especially if you hide in the fake rooms and then hop out from behind floral shower curtains and scare people!
