EffTD Review: Tudumo

by Mike Vardy on September 17, 2008

The following is a review of Tudumo by Xerxes Vardy, cousin of the venerable Mike Vardy.  The opinions expressed do not reflect those of Mike Vardy, and do not necessarily adhere to EffTD’s strict standard of, well, EffTD.  So there.

Tudomo Review There are many software applications out there that allow you to “get things done.”  Admittedly, I like to give as many as I can a whirl, as I like to see what’s out there and what works best for me.  Tudumo is a PC-based application that is simple to use and does what it states:  helps you get things done.

The first thing I noticed about Tudumo when I fired it up was the interface.  It was clean, crisp and simple to follow.  You’d expect an app that aids you in your productivity to be as clutter-free as possible, and Tudumo delivers.  It’s also adaptable; you can decide what goes where (headings can be Projects or Life Areas, for example) – and this flexibility allows you to really own what you need to do.  Nothing can be more frustrating than being stuck in rigidity when you need flow.

You can easily migrate the GTD methodology into Tudumo, but you don’t have to.  I found that I used a mix of both, as it gave me more freedom and kept me focussed on what needed to be done.  Sometimes with GTD I find myself wrapped up in the model, and Tudumo can provide a bit of an escape from that if you desire.

When you do tag something, the Projects/Life Areas that do not have visible actions hide themselves, allowing for more focus and a cleaner look.  Anything you haven’t modified or tackled in a while is shown in a lighter font.  You can use this “heatmap” to keep yourself aware of things that may otherwise slip through the cracks, and what needs to move up in your ranking of priorities. You’ll also notice that each heading has an “Action Icon” that varies depending on its current status, which you determine by clicking on the left-hand icon.

Filters also play an important role in Tudumo’s ability to help you get things done.  You can filter by date, tags, by the state of your tasks or by heading. This allows for a flexible approach to productivity that will simply make you work better.  The print options are nice as well, and customizable.  You can also install Tudumo on a flash drive so you can plug it into any USB port and have your list wherever you go!

While Tudumo is not a program I would necessarily consider for a company to use – it seems more in line with an individual’s needs than an entire organization’s – it is powerful enough in itself.  The lack of a web interface may put some off as well, but the ability to install it on a flash drive is a bonus that may circumvent that.  There is also no Mac version, and no mobile device version as well.

All in all, for PC users that need and want a clean and simple – yet powerful and flexible – application that will make them more productive, Tudumo is a great way to go.  You can download a free trial here – but for $29.95 you may just want to pony up the dough now for this program.  It’s well worth it.
