EffTD Review: Staying Up in Down Times by Bruce Elkin

by Mike Vardy on April 23, 2009

Note: The following review was written by Xerxes Vardy, Mike Vardy’s cousin.  Mike doesn’t view things, let alone re-view them.

Times are tough.  That’s a given.  And even though my cousin makes a point about everything coming around eventually, some of us want to be able to cope in the here and now.  Better still, some of us want to be able to thrive!

Bruce Elkin has written a book that will help keep you spirits up and reminds us all that opportunity is everywhere, both in good and bad times.  The key is to recognize and take advantage of those opportunities – and you’ll best be able to do that by staying up in down times.

This e-book was, I’ll admit, a surprising read for me.  I’ve read quite a few “motivational” books in my time, and there was a refreshing approach and feel to Elkin’s work here – which comes in at just under one hundred pages.  There’s nothing really new here per se, but the layout is what struck me.  Elkin has laid out this book in such a way that it allows you to “flow” through the process, rather than skip back and forth between pages.  It’s a natural approach to the message he’s conveying – and when he precahes the need for persistence, he compels you to follow through just by going through the book as it has been designed.

Staying Up in Down Times
reads like a gentle and necessary reminder.  During times such as these we all need a little prodding to keep our spirits up.  There’s a definite roadmap here that Elkin has laid out in front of the reader, from dealing with (and not dealing with) problem-solving to realizing the power of resiliency to putting the elements into practice.  It’s done very skillfully and thoughtfully; that is an achievement unto itself.

I’d recommend downloading the e-book and checking out Elkin’s website – he’s got a lot more to offer there.  He has been involved in personal coaching for many years, and he’s got a firm understanding on what it takes to “stay up in down times.”

I agree with the review of the book. I would add that I like Bruce’s focus on creating the life you want. Creating is a proactive process that is deeply aligned with who you are. It is a source of joy.
