There has long been a debate over what allows one to be more productive, if you tackle one task at a time or handle several at once. Well, I’m not here to add to that debate…I’m here to end it. If your task at this juncture is to become a well-rounded Eventualist, then you simply must do more than just that one task – you must do as many as you can.
The beauty of multitasking is in its complexity – its never-ending complexity. You can wrap your head around a ton of tasks and then add the additional task of keeping them straight. With single-tasking you’ll never get that bonus task. And everyone likes a bonus, right?
Ever done a Word Search? Well, multitasking lends itself to that as well. When you tackle a list of tasks one at a time with a specific plan or strategy in mind, you tend to go in order. But multitasking allows you to jump all over the place no that list, constantly searching for the next task you’ve completed or should add to the other eight things you’re doing. If you’re really imaginative and have the time, you can even create a hidden tasks amongst all the others tasks that is only revealed once you’ve done the tasks you’ve set out for yourself (I highly recommend only expert EffTDers attempt this – it is the practice of doing everything and nothing at once that will prepare you for that challenge).
Remember, if you have nothing going on then you’re not doing anything eventually. Only when you have stuff going on or plan to have stuff going on are you epitomizing a true Eventualist. To help you remember this, remember the mantra “Brain Likes Beer.” This will get you thinking about beer, which is pretty much a cure-all when it come to hitting your stride with EffTD (I even put the image of beer in this post…see if you can find it, but make sure you’re also still reading this while you do).
Whatever else I was going to write about is not important because now I’m going to get a beer…which means this entry will be incomplete.
And that’s just the way it eventually should be.
