As you remember, I went to TEDxVancouver last year. Very few got to do so. I got to do so.
Another person that got to do so was Sean Aiken, who embarked on a very noble/crazy journey when he decided to tackle 52 jobs over a 52 week period. He dubbed it The One-Week Job Project and it has since spawned not only a website, but a film and a book (which hit store shelves today in Canada and later this Spring in the US).
I eventually caught up with Sean again last week as he was on the road doing speaking engagements and the like. What follows is a short excerpt of my latest entry in the EffTD Interview Series.
Me: You’ve got this site, book, film, etc. that’s based around the concept of One-Week Job. It’s basically about having a different job a week…over the course of an entire year.
Sean: That’s right. 52 different jobs in 52 weeks.
Me: What made you decide to do that?
SA: Well, I realized I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career, so I wanted to try different jobs – see what I liked and didn’t like – and see what I need in a career to be happy.
Me: So, how long is your resumé now?
SA: It would be 52 pages long. (laughs) Actually, I try to sum it up in a couple of pages…but it could be quite extensive.
Me: Of all of the jobs you took on during the year, what was the most eventual in nature?
SA: Well, most people contacted me through the website so I didn’t have to reach out to people – advertising executive was one where I had to approach them because I wanted to try that out – so I’d probably say that one.
Me: Also, since advertisements tend to stick in one’s head that would be another eventualization of the job, I suppose. Since you were only at each job for one week, I have to ask: How many “Going Away” party banners did you end up collecting?
SA: (laughs) Several. There were several of them. I definitely don’t think I could have kept that up for a full year.
Me: So, 52 jobs later…52 weeks later…what job did you eventually realize was for you.
SA: You’ll have to read the book to find out!
Actually, he does let me in on what he might pursue further…but you’ll have to listen to the full audio interview with Sean on this week’s all-new podcast to find out!
The newly formed podcast, An Eventual Life, will debut this Wednesday. I know you’ll eventually love it.
