The 5 Most Eventual Sports

by Mike Vardy on June 9, 2010

I don’t talk about sports much here at Eventualism, but this has to be said.

Hockey has eventually finished.  And it’s June.

But while hockey ranks up there as one of the most eventual sports on the face of the planet, there are others that trump its eventualness.  Here now is a list of the 5 most eventual sports:

1. Football/Soccer

The World Cup is about to start, now that it has the ending of the National Hockey League season has given it permission to do so.  Much like the Olympics, it happens every four years.  Unlike the Olympics, however, Canada rarely is even there…let alone competitive.  The hype for the event has gone on for so long I had no idea when it was actually going to start – much like how you never know when a football/soccer game is actually going to end.  The “extra”  in Extra Time clearly has no set amount…but I’m sure it’s at least not measured using the Imperial system.

2. Football/Football

Unlike the game that’s almost exclusively played with feet, this football eventually made the transition to the most eventual of sports based on its “bowl games” in the college ranks.  Not that the seasons are long and eventual, but figuring out each team is actually ranked is what takes the time.  In the pro ranks, the eventual nature is more for the players than for the fans – the players wind up with so many concussions that they eventually forget they ever played the game, what the game actually is and what their names are.

3. Catch The Oil

The great thing about this sport is…what?  Oh.  My bad.  With all the strategic maneuvers, length of time and how it’s captured the collective conscience of the world, I thought it was one.  Then again, since the British are ruling it, I should have suspected it wasn’t.

By the way, if you’re wondering to yourself:

“Hey, Mike ended the list with only 3 sports!” – You

…look closer.  I’ve listed “Football/Soccer”, meaning mens’ and womens’ editions and “Football/Football”, meaning American and Canadian editions.  And despite all arguments to the contrary, Canadian football does count.

After all, not everything is black and white – there are shades of “Grey” in there as well.

I don’t do this often, either, but I’m going to ask my readers what sport they consider eventual and why?  Feel free to comment…unless you are chicken.
