Reader Mail: Procrastination vs. Eventualism

by Mike Vardy on June 16, 2010

What’s the difference between procrastination and Eventualism?  That’s what one of my readers wants to know in today’s installment of Reader Mail:

Dear Mike,

I’m pretty new to Eventualsm and the biggest thing I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around is the difference between Eventualism and procrastination.  They seem to be very similar.

Please enlighten me.

Sincerely,
D. Lay

They may seem similar (I’ve even talked about the former right here at this very site), but they are clearly two different things.

Eventualism revolves around the idea that you don’t commit to a specific time to get stuff done other than to commit t doing it eventually.  That is the essence of Eventualism.  There are several tools and strategies you can employ to make eventualizing easier, such as becoming an Email Pirate or doing a lot of meditating in.  Those who have been Eventualists for a terribly long time have gotten this down to a science and the tools become less important than what you do eventually.  Essentially, you become the tool.

As for procrastination, you plan to do things and then put them off continuously.  Somewhere down the line you get it done – or aim to get it done – but sometimes you don’t pull it off or pull off shoddy workmanship because you didn’t plan on doing it so late.

So, in short, procrastination is about having a plan to do something and then executing it eventually while Eventualism is about eventually doing something based on a plan to do so eventually all along.

There you have it.

(Oh, and if you want to ask somebody about procrastination further…ask this guy.)

Eventualism sounds like much more fun than procrastination. I’m tired of breaking my own self-imposed deadlines; breaking a promise to yourself makes you feel guilt and anger at the same time.

Other than Ze Frank making cool videos about it, procrastination is wy less fun. It’s like its taking its sweet time on becoming fun or something.
